Super Mario Bros. (スーパーマリオブラザーズ, Sūpā Mario Burazāzu?) is a platform video game developed by Nintendo and released in 1985 for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It is the first game in the Super Mario series. The player controls Mario and travels through the Mushroom Kingdom to rescue Princess Toadstool from the clutches of Bowser, Mario's antagonist. The game is playable by two players, with the first player controlling Mario and the second player controlling Luigi, Mario's brother. Super Mario Bros. is one of the best-selling video games of all time, with over 40 million copies sold worldwide. As a launch title, Super Mario Bros. was partly responsible for the success of the Nintendo Entertainment System and the end of the 1983 video game crash in the United States. Being one of the greatest successes of Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, the game has spawned numerous sequels and spin-offs. On its own, Super Mario Bros. set a standard for level design that all subsequent games would follow. It definitively popularized horizontal scrolling, end-of-level bosses and sub-bosses, secret shortcuts, and the ability to restart the game with increased difficulty. The game's music, composed by Koji Kondo, is recognized worldwide and has since become representative of video games in general.
