Inspired by the role-playing game called Bushido, L5R takes place, according to legend, in the region of Rokugan, an imaginary country reminiscent of feudal Japan, with influences from other East Asian cultures, where samurai and shugenja (wizards) from different clans struggle to dominate each other.
Since 2002 (Gold Edition), it has been translated into French, and in 2004 also into Spanish and German. Only the cards have been translated, the game retains its original English name. France is the country with the most active community after the United States. However, the French translation will cease in 2011 with the Emperor edition.
This card game is similar to Magic: The Gathering but has a unique game mechanism and elements that distinguish it from its prestigious predecessor. Thus, there are passive victory conditions, such as the victory by enlightenment (Enlightenment Victory), which opposes the goal of Magic, which is to destroy your opponent (their life points, or their library).
In 1997, Legend of Five Rings: Battle of Beiden Pass won the Origins Award for Best Card Game of 1996. In 1998, Legend of the Five Rings: Time of the Void won the Best Card Game Expansion or Supplement of 1997.
A role-playing game is derived from this card game: The Book of Five Rings. |
