The tuk-tuk (in Thai « ตุ๊กตุ๊ก » or « ตุ๊กๆ », pronunciation: touk touk) is a Thai motorized tricycle generally used as a taxi. It consists of a monocoque body with a scooter-like front, on one wheel, with handlebars, extended by a « carriage » covered with a canopy, on two wheels, in which the passengers sit. There is generally room for three adults.
The engine is of low displacement, comparable to those used in small two-wheelers such as scooters.
The front part is built from a motorcycle or scooter; the engine is generally a 2-stroke. In practice, the construction of these vehicles is now the subject of specific design and their production is industrialized. Most tuk-tuks are equipped with a bodywork without doors with a windshield, thus protecting the driver as well as the passengers.
