The Studebaker - "Tintin in the Land of Black Gold" (1950)
The Dupont detectives are investigating a case of adulterated gasoline. They suspect a Simoun repair company in which they get hired to find out more. Under the cap, they chain the blunders and are relegated to a subordinate function. They have the heavy task of checking the tire pressure. They burst with dexterity and are fired on the spot. The car whose tire pressure they are checking is a Studebaker.
THE CAR THAT INSPIRED HERGÉ:
Brand: Studebaker
Model: Comander Regal De Luxe Coupe
Year: 1947
Top speed: +/- 150 km/h
Cylinders: V8
FAITHFUL DETAILS:
The design: The line of this car was designed by the brilliant Franco-American designer Raymond Loewy. This coupe owed its main originality to the extraordinary semi-circular rear window with which it was endowed. Its nose is adorned with two very characteristic emblems of the time. From the 1950s, the nose will be even more original and known as the "bullet nose".
Coupe: The brand offered different versions: 4 doors, convertible, 2-door coupe.
In blue and red: The Duponts wear a blue uniform and cap highlighted with red. This choice on the part of Hergé is not the result of chance. One of the advertising brochures in Hergé's files shows a sparkling gas station attendant dressed in a rather similar tunic.
