The convertible - "The Blue Lotus" (1946)
As he walks on a country road, Tintin crosses a convertible driven by the American industrialist with whom he had an altercation on the very day of his arrival in Shanghai. Regretting having missed the opportunity to settle his score with Tintin, Gibbons (that's his name) will find a way to do so through a third party a few moments later. The convertible in question was born from the imagination of Hergé, inspired by models that had seen the light of day in the United States in the very early 1930s/44) and the CJ-2 (1944/45) better known as the AgriJeep.
THE CAR THAT INSPIRED HERGÉ:
Brand: Oldsmobile, Dodge, Chevrolet
Year: 1930s
FAITHFUL DETAILS:
The design: The lines of this car are clearly American-inspired and could have its oval and flat grille from an Oldsmobile roadster, its U-shaped bumpers from a Dodge sedan and its fixed windshield from a Chevrolet convertible.
Right-hand drive!: The fact that this convertible has its steering wheel on the right may be surprising, as left-hand drive has never been the norm in the United States. However, we must not forget that manufacturers have always dedicated a portion of their production to exports and for countries where left-hand drive is the norm: and this was the case in 1930s China.
1930s: For Americans, the early 1930s mark the post-crisis period. The American way of life is leaving its mark on the automotive industry. This period will give rise to a very aesthetic style never equaled since.
