Black Mountain, a small town in North Carolina. Life flows peacefully. Yet, Emily Steiner, a lovely eleven-year-old girl, is kidnapped, tortured and murdered. The modus operandi is identical to that of serial killer Temple Gault, whom Kay Scarpetta has been tracking for years. Supported by Marino and Wesley, she unravels one by one the threads that bring her closer to the murderer. She must face the hostility of a community struck by horror, and the grief of a mother who cannot understand why they want to exhume her daughter.
