HeroQuest is a board game published in France in 1989 by MB in cooperation with Games Workshop, halfway between the role-playing game. Simplified from the beginning compared to the original English game, it nevertheless enjoyed phenomenal success in Europe and then in the United States in a more accomplished version.
The basic box offers players (2 to 5 maximum) the opportunity to live fantastic adventures by embodying one or more heroes among the barbarian, the dwarf, the elf and the enchanter. With luxurious material including no less than 35 finely detailed figurines, special dice and 3D furniture (treasure chests, fireplace, tables, throne, bookshelves, easel, tomb, etc.), the game will witness a very great success in France. Four expansions will be released. A reissue of the basic box took place in 1990 and then in 1994, leading to slight modifications in the rules, game cards and general presentation. The latest version offered an addition of 12 figurines of men-at-arms (crossbowmen, swordsmen, halberdiers and scouts) intended to help the heroes in their adventures.
HeroQuest offers basic rules to target a wide audience. One player must be the game master and the others take on the role of the heroes. They must complete missions in the form of quests and can win magical objects and gold in order to improve their equipment and increase their chances of survival in the dungeons and other catacombs they will be led to discover as they progress. The game is presented in the form of a large modular board on which the game master (called Morcar) will watch the progress of the heroes and set up the doors, traps, monsters and furniture elements. His role is also to assume the movement and attacks of the creatures encountered. The game includes many spell cards, equipment treasures, etc. and each character has a personal record sheet to manage their equipment and note the missions accomplished.
It should be noted that in France the game was simplified compared to the original English version which added cardboard tokens of chaos curses that some monsters could benefit from.
