Final Fantasy VII is a role-playing video game developed by Square (now Square Enix) under the direction of Yoshinori Kitase and released in 1997, constituting the seventh installment of the Final Fantasy series. The first game in the series to be produced for the Sony PlayStation console as well as for Windows-based computers, it is also the first Final Fantasy to use 3D graphics with real-time rendered characters and pre-rendered backgrounds.
The game's story, from an eschatological perspective, centers on the struggle of an eco-terrorist group called 'Avalanche' against a powerful organization called 'Shinra', which exploits the planet's vital energy to produce energy and weapons. As the game progresses, the conflict intensifies and the future of the world becomes the main stake.
An enormous critical and commercial success, the game sold over 9.7 million copies worldwide, which greatly contributed to the success of the PlayStation, as well as the export of RPGs of the same type outside of Japan. The game's great popularity led Square Enix to produce a series of sequels and prequels starting in 2004, collectively titled the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII.
