The Mega Drive (メガドライブ, Mega Doraibu?)[cn 1], or Genesis in North America, is a fourth-generation video game console designed and marketed by the Japanese company Sega Enterprises, Ltd. The Mega Drive is Sega's third console, succeeding the Master System. Sega first released the console in Japan under the name Mega Drive in 1988, and the console was then launched in North America in 1989, renamed Genesis in that territory. In 1990, the console was released in most other territories as the Mega Drive.
