The Super Nintendo Entertainment System (commonly abbreviated as Super NES or Super Nintendo[3]), or Super Famicom (スーパーファミコン?) in Japan, is a 16-bit video game console developed by the Japanese company Nintendo and released starting in November 1990. In North America, the console was released with a significantly different look. It should be noted that in South Korea, the Super Nintendo is distributed by Hyundai Electronics under the name Super Comboy (슈퍼 컴보이). The consoles are zoned (Asia, Europe, America) but the concrete differences are non-existent or easily bypassed. The Super Nintendo is a 16-bit generation console, released to counter Sega's Mega Drive (16-bit) and to a lesser extent NEC's PC-Engine (with an 8-bit main processor and a 16-bit graphics processor) and SNK's Neo-Geo AES (16-bit). In 1997 and 1998, Nintendo decided to refresh the design by releasing the SNS-101 model, sometimes called the Super NES 2 in the United States, and the Super Famicom Jr. in Japan.
