At the beginning of your adventure, you wake up on a planet known as the 'portal to the starry heavens' and meet Harmony, a character who comes to Mario's aid, notably by sending him a star to accompany him on his quest. This star and new loyal friend teaches Mario a special ability, the whirlwind, which will allow him to interact with certain decors and elements of the planets to explore... Using the Wii remote and Nunchuk, controlling Mario has never been so instinctive but also so different. Players manipulate Mario with the Nunchuk's analog stick and make him jump with the Wiimote's A button, but they can also interact with the environments by simply waving their controller. The pointer, symbolized by a blue star, is also used by players to collect star shards scattered throughout the galaxies and available after defeating certain enemies. These shards are very useful to Mario as they can be fired at enemies to paralyze them and open up secret levels by feeding Luma, a special star! Activated by simply wiggling the Wii remote, the whirlwind ability given to Mario by Harmony is the new attack that players have at their disposal. It allows them to interact with certain elements of the planets, stun enemies and, when used during a jump, to jump even higher. Mario can perform simple, double and even triple jumps, and the various gravitational fields allow him to perform all kinds of acrobatics never seen before! Finally, Mario can propel himself from one planet to another using special launch stars and even grab hook stars to resist the suction of the void of space!
