We have seen customized mods of various controllers that use LEDs to backlight the artwork, which works, but there are limits to what you can do. With EL, the entire control panel can be illuminated or you can specifically choose the areas to be illuminated, with precision since the EL film itself is placed directly behind the control panel. Furthermore, since the EL film is thin, it can be installed in any controller that has a replaceable custom design under a transparent plexi. LEDs are thick and therefore only suitable for custom applications. Due to their size, placing multiple LEDs behind the artwork you want to illuminate causes what is called "blooming" or "clouding" around the edges. In other words, electroluminescence is the only possible option to properly realize backlit artworks.
