The preface of the book is signed by the director: Pete Docter. He tells us that he is more at ease to express himself through drawing than through words. He quickly returns to the announcement of the project with Bob Peterson, this moving story of an old man and a flying house. Tim Hauser analyzes the scriptwriting work of the film. The screenwriters dwelled a lot on Carl's motivations and on the relationships between the characters. The story was very different at the beginning of the project: two brothers on a flying city. This idea was abandoned because the emotion was lacking and the work on the isolation of the character was not deep enough. Pete Docter insists that he wants an empathetic film, a film that touches our heart. The idea of ??using dogs comes up quite quickly because they feel things differently and especially very simply. Another point was important for the director and Bob Peterson, the temporality. Carl's quest had to be more important than his goal. The lyrical tone of the film was inspired by Miyazaki's work. Pete Docter is very sensitive to the creation of the worlds that this man brings in his mangas.
