Little Parisians spend a weekend in Normandy with their grandparents. France enters the war and a decision is made to keep them away from Paris, to "see what happens". This stay, which was to last a few weeks, will extend over the five years of the war, turning into "very long holidays"...
Refugees in a rural world that is completely foreign to them, Ernest and Colette will open up to a new life thanks to the group of village children, to work on the farm, to the discovery of nature and animals. But they will also be confronted with the German occupation, requisitions, deprivations, the loss of loved ones, and patriotism. They will have to grow up and adapt in a war-torn world that upsets all their bearings.
