Roland has finally given in to Odrunn's demands, he will go and fetch Durandal. In him has then awakened an ancient and powerful blood that desires the sword more than anything. In Brittany, Muriel has agreed to marry Ganelon to save her people, caught between the Domonne and the fierce Danes. But the situation remains desperate and the March of Brittany is wavering. In Norway, Edda and Master Turpin have failed to convince the Jarls and Norman kings to help them in their fight against the Danes... yet they cannot resign themselves to abandoning Roland to his fate and are embarking on a desperate quest.
