Rome: an archivist of the Grand Orient is murdered during a reception at the French embassy, following a ritual that evokes the death of Hiram, the legendary founder of Freemasonry. In Jerusalem, an archaeologist in possession of an enigmatic engraved stone suffers a similar fate. Commissioner Antoine Marcas, a Freemason, and his assistant, Jade Zewinski, find themselves confronted with the killers of a Nazi brotherhood, the Thule Society, the ancestral adversary of Freemasonry.
