Ernest and Colette arrive at their grandparents' house in September 1939. War is declared just after their arrival. Their father is mobilized and their mother, suffering from tuberculosis, has to go to the sanatorium. The children will stay in the countryside to start the school year, but the events unfold and finally, they will stay there throughout the war. This first volume recounts the first year of Ernest and Colette in Grangeville, between their grandparents, their new classmates, the worry of being separated from their parents: a new life, full of surprises and discoveries, in a tumultuous historical context.
