Published on the occasion of the exhibition Wandering Inquiries, Emile Guimet's illustrated journey through Asia at the Guimet Museum, Paris from December 6, 2017 to March 12, 2018.
This work, the catalog of the exhibition "Wandering Inquiries. Emile Guimet's illustrated journey through Asia", evokes, on the occasion of the centenary of his death, Emile Guimet's extraordinary journey through Southeast Asia. From this ten-month journey was born the Museum of Asian Arts.
It was in 1876 that Emile Guimet (1838-1918), the founder of the museum, met the painter Félix Régamey (1844-1907) in the United States. The two then embarked on a long journey that would take them to Japan, China, Southeast Asia, and then India before returning to Europe. Based on a selection of paintings, sculptures, porcelains, photographs, drawings and epistolary exchanges, this catalog retraces the journey of the two men, "ten months that will illuminate the rest of [their] lives", and gives a glimpse of the birth of the museum's collections.
