"The term will no doubt be without incident," thought Betty Allen as she returned to Shelley School after Christmas. But life at Shelley School is always eventful and captivating... There are new ones, the pretentious and mannered Mabel, the gifted and lazy Julian, the unsympathetic Martin, the shy Rosemary. And what strange events: who stole Rosemary's, Cora's, Mabel's money and Betty's brand new shilling that she marked with a Chinese ink cross? Betty will commit many imprudences, many mistakes, she is so carried away and so impulsive! But everything ends up working out. An act of courage will make her the heroine of the school and, unanimously, she will be appointed a monitor again. A triumph for Betty!
