Constituted as an elite corps under the leadership of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, the 501st Battalion participated in decisive battles during the Clone Wars. After the rise of the Galactic Empire, and under the designation of "assault troops", its members will continue to serve under the orders of Darth Vader, of whom they will constitute the personal unit - hence their nickname of "Vader's Fist".
